“Days Gone”

Days Gone” from Sony Bend Studio, is a game taking place after an epidemic that causes most the world to be overrun with crazed zombies called “freakers”. The game received rather mediocre reviews 6-7 which are fair in the sense the game could have been stellar with a little more polish on launch. The character models especially are lower quality than most Sony first-party titles. But these issues aside, it is a game I have really enjoyed and will complete.

You are Deacon St. John, a biker traveling with his best friend, “Boozer” and wife, Sarah. Sarah is injured and you put her on a rescue chopper thinking she will be safe. You are Boozer head out and plan on doing what it takes to survive. Deacon’s plan is to find her and that sets up the story and gives him a reason to never give up.

The gameplay mechanics are typical as you scavenge, upgrade and help different camps by killing marauders, thugs and freakers. Your bike is your transportation and you get upgrades to it to improve its stats, durability, and speed. The melee weapons have the durability that you need to keep track of. Your guns do not but you have limited ammo.

The game is rather long and could have been a little more concise as we are getting so many large games it does become a problem when they are all aiming at 50 plus hours to complete. But overall, I am enjoying the story and some of the landscapes are pretty darn gorgeous!

The highlight of the tech in the game is probably the “hordes” of freakers. They pull some magic to put more on-screen than you have seen in most games and if you attract them, well it is big trouble and certain death! It is a stealth game and you take out stragglers but a horde of these things will overrun you almost instantly. In the late game, you have the power to take on these monstrosities and it is rewarding to remove their menace from the world!

In a time of game delays and setbacks, it is a good game to play before the next generation comes and we all get overloaded with games again. I have to admit I enjoy zombie games and this one has been a fun ride~!

I see no way to track the time in-game but I would assume I have 60-70 hours of playtime before I completed the story. There is more to do after and a ng+ added if so inclined to continue on. The game is also out on PC now with higher framerate and better visuals.
