Returning to one of the greats of my childhood.
Final Fantasy VII is one of those pivotal role-playing games that was a huge hit in 1997 on the PS 1. It was huge, had a cool story and opened up so many to Japanese role-playing games (jrpgs) to us here in the west. Not the first but one of the biggest at that time and moved many Playstations. I owned it but I never finished it. So I decided to return and finish it before Final Fantasy VII Remake comes out.
The game is about a ragtag group of mercenaries who are out to save the planet from being destroyed. It is a turn-based battle system and your character has special moves (when the limit bar fills) that do awesome damage. The story takes place over some 20sih odd locations and introduced abs (active battle system). It was originally coming to the Snes but things changed from that to the cd based PlayStation and it was the first Final Fantasy with 3d polygon characters. They added the abs system as reading from a cd took time compared to a cart. But they could now have awesome music with the cd technology and I do still enjoy the soundtrack in this game.
I found the battles manageable and not too hard and the story was thought out and kept me interested. The upgrades in weapons and materia system is the high point in this game. Adding different materia gives you different skills and spells and mastering this makes the battles fun. The summons in the game is also a huge bonus and still impressive animations and graphics so many years later.
If you are a rpg fan and have never completed this gem I recommend playing this and seeing what all the fuss was about! It came from a simpler time but it still manages to tell a great story with the limits of the hardware. The PC version now has some enhancements and runs fine on today’s computers and is also out for Ps4, Xbox One and Switch.
The game took me about 75 hours to complete and now I am ready for FFVII REMAKE!!!
